ADOBE WALL FINISH WITH VENEER PLASTERS
by Catherine Hall of The Faux Store

For this months Issue¡K For those of you who recall our last article on our special floor plaster, this will come as no surprise. Why not put it on the walls? If it's good for floors, it's definitely good enough for walls. If the kids scribble with crayon or the dog splashes mud, you can scrub it all you like, plus it will take bumps better that latex walls since it's an acrylic polymer colored with an acrylic resin. (We even put it on a metal door and melamine counter top).

You will need:
> The Faux Store Floor Plaster
> 4' putty knife
> Damp cloth
> Masking tape bristle brush
> Mason's Select Concrete Stain
> High Adhesive Acrylic Primer (Depending on surface)

Surface Preparation
Walls already painted with white latex paint are ready to go walls painted in a dark color should be primed so the color doesn't show through drywall, intact vinyl wall paper and oil painted walls require two coats of primer wood paneling should be primed, grooves filled and sanded, then primed again.

Step 1
Mask ceiling, baseboards and trim. Fill any large holes or cracks.

Step 2
Dip manageable amounts of plaster onto your putty knife and flatten it thin as if you're buttering toast, changing direction of flow occasionally to add interest. Try to avoid knife ridges. If so, flatten them down. Wipe your blade with a damp cloth whenever you need to remove "scratchy buildup".

Step 3
You may stop and start as often as you like or leave a wall halfway done, because even if you continue it a week later it doesn't matter. You will get an interesting ridge line that looks like a natural vein. A few veins look great. The plaster will dry overnight with no unpleasant smell.

Step 4
The easiest way to color the plaster is by dipping your brush directly into the concrete stain container (stir occasionally). Dragging the stain as far as it will go. Do not apply the stain heavily or it will look blotchy. You will naturally get overlap lines in areas but this adds to the appeal. Only one coat of stain is required.

The Finished Product
For those of you who like rich, warm, earthtones and the actual look and feel of real stone walls, this simple faux finish will enhance any wall. Why not drop by and see for yourself, and of course, you're welcome to touch it.
